Haven fic atm suddenly seems to be leaning toward AUs. Eh, I suppose it's a symptom of where the finale left off, going by other discussion I've seen of why the fic seems to have dried up rather over the hiatus, that maybe people feel like AUs are the only place to go? It really surprises me because I thought the possibilities left open by that ending were HUGE. Mara wants someone to help her retrieve William, and Mara can manipulate people's Troubles. We don't know yet how those will be played with in canon, but in the meantime if you ask 'what happens next?'... we've the possibility of the Troubles suddenly becoming very fluid, and the possibility of Our Heroes travelling to other dimensions. So I'd have thought there'd be so much more fic jumping on that before canon gets to it and takes those toys away.
I'm working on the theory that William was lying by implication when he suggested he didn't know what would happen if people had more than one Trouble, because he wanted to use Audrey's curiosity to find out, and that Mara can do that and has done that. The door can be re-opened. Mara needs a canvas to make full use of her powers, in this case Nathan (poor Nathan). I don't know what Mara will be like and how she'll react to Nathan, and Audrey's memories of them together, but I'm gonna take a crack at writing my version before canon seals it in stone.
I had some vague thoughts that canonical season 5 is actually going to turn out to be The Search For William in the sense of working toward a way to get William back in Mara's quest (while Nathan, Duke and co struggle in the background to get Audrey back), as I imagine the sets and locations in Nova Scotia will stay the same, so we probably won't get lengthy adventures searching for William on alien worlds. But who knows. Anyway, I'm going to go there while I can.
It's so difficult juggling Audrey, Mara, Nathan and William, though, that this story might end up being more abbreviated than originally intended. It's at about 18,000 words right now, just looped back to the starting point, so in theory there's only the fallout and the wrapping up left to do. And then it will need a truly unreasonable amount of editing, because my attention on this one has been crap.
Watching Person of Interest kinda makes me want to go the AU route with Duke/Nathan bodyguard!AU fic (Nathan's the mutant bodyguard. Duke can be a wealthy Yoga guru or something, who doesn't think he needs a bodyguard, IDK). And that reminds me that I really should finish the Nano novel with the AlternateUniverse!Trouble where Duke is Tony Stark.
